CFM+ Intake Manifolds are manufactured from a high temperature composite material which allows your cooled air from your intercooler to be insulated from under-the-hood engine heat. This means not only are you getting the most air to your engine but also the coolest air. More air and cooler air means more power, more performance, lower EGTs and better fuel economy.
CFM+ Intake Manifolds are made from a highly engineered composite material. The single piece composite manifold construction is able to handle temperatures up to 400 degrees F. The OEM aluminum manifold absorbs and gives off heat and has a very high transfer rate. CFM+ composite material has a low heat transfer rate. Your diesel engine operates more efficiently with cool air, not warm or hot air, but your turbo heats the outside air as it compresses it for delivery to your engine. That where an intercooler comes in. However your cooled air then passes through a cast aluminum intake on its way into the engine, and that cast intake is hot from under the hood temps and from heat from the engine its bolted to. This heat transfers back into the air flow and into your engine. CFM+ composite material has a heat transfer rate of 900 times less than cast aluminum which means your cooled intercooler air stays cool as it pass through and into your engine. Cooler air means more power and lower EGT’s.
Why does the CFM+ flow so much more air than the other oversized cast aluminum manifolds in the market and maintain lower air temps?
The large center section of your OEM cast aluminum manifold may look impressive but it is very bad for flow. The inlet to the manifold from the inter cooler and the outlet of the intake manifold into the engine are very similar in cross-sectional area so when the center section is over three times larger than the inlet and outlet the air flow slows dramatically through this center section. The air flow then is forced to speed up to exit. This causes turbulence in the flow, leading to pressure drop or pumping losses.
Many competitor’s manifolds are so over-sized in the center section that two of the mounting fasteners which hold the intake to the engine have to be changed to long bolts or studs that must pass directly through the air flow. This causes tremendous turbulence in the flow leading to additional pressure drop or pumping losses.
Cast aluminum has a much rougher surface than the advanced technology composite CFM+ manifold. The rough interior surface of your OEM or some competitor’s cast aluminum manifolds causes additional turbulence.
