History of the Fleece Cheetah Turbo
The Fleece Cheetah Turbo line was first designed and tested on the 2004.5 LLY Duramax owned by company founder Brayden Fleece. After achieving the gains with his own engine, Brayden and his brother expanded their view to other engines. Today, Fleece Engineering Performance has available turbos for Cummins 5.9L and 6.7L, Powerstroke 6.0L and 6.7L, and Duramax 6.6L engines.
The Fleece Cheetah
Fleece Engineering Performance wanted to create a line of turbos for heavy-duty diesel engines that inspired the combined forces of speed and power. That is why they chose to name their turbos after the fastest land mammal: the cheetah. Cheetahs can reach top speeds of up to 70-80 miles an hour, which is just below the fastest freeway speeds that motor vehicles are allowed to travel in the United States. Their top speed is impressive, but cheetah’s have another insane ability which makes them a force to be reckoned with—their astounding acceleration speed.
It may be hard to believe, but a full grown cheetah can go from 0 to 60 in as little as three seconds. That is just 0.03 seconds slower than the Ferrari 488 Pista (record of 2.7 seconds), and 1.34 seconds slower than the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon 170 (record 1.66 seconds). Specially formed muscles in the cheetah’s legs allow it to start to sprint with a powerful burst of speed and keep up the momentum until it reaches top speed. That power, boost, and sustainability is what each Fleece Cheetah emulates.
Fleece Cheetah Turbo
So how does one make a turbocharger that lives up the legend of the cheetah? The first step is to understand how the cheetah, an animal, held the fastest land speed record for thousands of years. The answer is found in the design of the cheetah’s body. The cheetah’s secret isn’t a singular factor, but a combination of parts that have been specifically tailored to fit the niche skill the species needs for survival. In a similar manner, Fleece Engineering Performance has taken great care to build their turbos so that each component focuses on the niche need of the product, namely, the ability to produce sustainable boost.
Fleece Cheetah Turbo vs Stock Turbo
FMW Compressor Wheel
The compressor wheel is a very important component of a turbocharger. It draws air from the pipe inside the compressor. Generally speaking, most stock compressor wheels are cast from a mold. While they are functional, casted metal has the chance of having tiny air pockets trapped within the metal that weaken the frame. Compressor wheels endure high speeds and temperatures, and a lesser quality material just won’t cut it over time in most cases.
Fleece Engineering Performance uses FMW compressor wheels in their design instead. FMW stands for Forged Mill Wheel, which refers to the process of forging the materials, usually aluminum, prior to using a machine to mill out the exact shape of the compressor wheel. Forging aluminum greatly increases the metal’s durability; which allows it to be cut with finer precision than when it was cast. This makes it possible to produce compressor wheels with better designs for increased airflow that last better under the intense pressure of spin cycles.
Variable Nozzle Turbo (VNT)
One problem that has existed since the beginning of turbochargers is the limiting factor of size in relation to boost. Turbochargers create boost through a process known as spooling; which is where air and exhaust gasses are pulled into the housing and compressed before being released into the engine. The size of the turbine housing greatly determines how fast the turbo is able to spool. Smaller turbos spool faster, and therefore provide quicker boost; however, they have various limitations at higher rpm including the inability to provide sufficient boost, causing back pressure and over boosting. Large turbochargers spool much slower than smaller turbochargers, but handle higher speeds better because they can provide better boost and have less back pressure.
Fleece Cheetah Turbo designs strive to circumvent the limitations of both the large and small turbos by using variable nozzle technology. Variable Nozzle Turbos (VNT) use moveable vanes within the turbo housing to control the size of the turbo housing. This enables the turbo to not only work at its smallest and largest capacities, but also at every degree in between. VNTs currently provide the best overarching boost capabilities on the market because they self-adjust to match the engine’s exhaust output.
Better Capacity
Fleece Cheetah Turbos are made with larger compressor wheels and turbine housings than their stock counterparts. This allows Fleece turbos to have a greater capacity to handle higher horsepower applications.
Better Sound
Fleece Cheetah Turbos are known for the great sound they produce while at idle and when hard at work. With a Fleece Cheetah, you can hear your turbo working hard as it spools up and provides the boost that you are looking for. Stock turbos, especially those that come with Duramax engines, are known to be pretty quiet. By changing to a turbo by Fleece Engineering Performance, you can make your engine sing.
Fleece Cheetah Turbo Options
Fleece Cheetah Turbo 5.9 Cummins
The 5.9L Cummins engine was first used in a diesel truck in 1989; however, additions like the P7100 Injection Pump that were added in 1994 really made a significant change to the engine’s ability to perform. From then, Cummins continued to modify the engine to increase performance while complying with the new emissions regulations that were released between 2000-2010. Even though Cummins stopped producing the 5.9L engine in favor of the larger 6.7L engine, they still remain popular with diesel enthusiasts because they work great, and can still be maintained. They are getting along in years now, so if you are looking for a way to bring some pep back into your 5.9L Cummins engine, then we recommend taking a look at the Fleece Cheetah Turbo 5.9 Cummins selection.

Fleece Cheetah Turbo 6.7 Cummins
The 6.7L Cummins engine was launched in 2007 to replace the smaller 5.9L engine, and has continued to be used to the present time. These engines produce more horsepower and torque than the 5.9L, with the 5.9L producing 215 - 325 horsepower at 2,700-2,900 rpm and 420 - 610 lb-ft of torque at 1,400-1,600 rpm, and the 6.7L producing 350-385 horsepower at 2,800-3,013 rpm and 610-900 lb-ft of torque at 1,500-1,700 RPM. Fleece Cheetah Turbo 6.7 Cummins options are designed to help these engines perform even better.

Fleece Cheetah turbo 6.0 Powerstroke
The 6.0 Powerstroke was released in late 2003 as a replacement for the larger 7.3L Powerstroke. In order to meet the new emission standards that were rolling in with the new century, Ford had to make a cut on size, to be able to provide more precision. Despite the loss of 1.3L, and even though there are definitely some well known issues, particularly with the heads, the 6.0 Powerstroke still proved to be a popular engine. Having a Fleece Cheetah turbo on your 6.0L Powerstroke is a great way to provide your engine with a great boost and give it improved sound.

Fleece Cheetah Turbo 6.7 Powerstroke
If the option exists to pick between a 6.0L Powerstroke and a 6.7L Powerstroke, there are a lot of reasons why choosing the 6.7L is a great choice. For one, these engines are newer. More than that they also sport a lot of features that were first released with this engine model. This engine was developed to last for the long term, which is obvious by how long it has been in production. Using a Fleece Cheetah Turbo 6.7 Powerstroke will enable your 6.7L engine to have the boost it needs to perform at its peak.
