Why get a Bully Dog Turbo?

Whether you are currently in the market for an aftermarket turbo or just wondering why you should consider it, you definitely want to check out the Bully Dog Turbo product line. Bully Dog Big Rig makes turbos for various popular CAT, Detroit, Cummins, Paccar, and Volvo applications.
Here are a few reasons why getting a turbo from Bully Dog Big Rig may be a better choice in the long run then getting a factory replacement.

Improve Performance with a Bully Dog Turbo

The Bully Dog Turbo option for your truck is going to give you a better bang for your buck than its factory counterpart. The amount of horsepower gain that you will get will depend on the application and engine type, but all Bully Dog Turbos have been built to outperform their stock counterpart in horsepower, boost lag, and torque. On average, Bully Dog Turbos will make about 5 to 10 PSI of boost more than your factory turbo. You'll also see an increase in actual horsepower to the ground of between 20 to 40 horsepower.

A Bully Dog Turbo is a better quality product

Bully Dog Big Rig has built their turbos to be more durable than factory turbos, have a faster spin, and reduced turbo lag. Additionally, these turbos have been designed to help reduce back pressure, which is a key factor in a turbo’s ability to produce boost.

Direct Stock Replacement

Bully Dog Big Rig makes their turbos to be direct replacements for the OEM turbos, so they can be bolted into the factory locations without any need for modifications.

Bully Dog Turbo: Key Components

Billet Wheel

There is a misconception that having a billet wheel is going to give you an increase in boost speed. While the specific design of the wheel may help with spooling, the actual reason why having a billet wheel over a cast wheel is important is that billet wheels are stronger. Due to their additional structural strength it is possible to refine the shape, thickness, and even the number of the blades, all of which will play a part in the compressor wheel’s performance.

So, while having any old billet wheel may not guarantee better performance, having a billet wheel designed for improved performance will and those are the type of billet wheels that Bully Dog Big Rig puts in each Bully Dog Turbo.

Bully Dog Turbo Actuator

Actuator (Cummins, Paccar, and Mack/Volvo)

The actuator is an important part of a VGT (variable geometry turbo) because it indicates when the vanes inside the turbo move up or down, which regulates the size of the housings. OEM VGT actuators have a tendency to fail, which is why Bully Dog Big Rig provides a new, pre-calibrated actuator with each VGT Bully Dog Turbo that they make.

 Journal Bearings

The parts of the turbocharger that are commonly referred to as journal bearings are actually made out of two different types of bearings: thrust bearings, which handle the thrust loads; and journal bearings, which handle the radial loads. These two types of bearings work together for the benefit of the turbo with the thrust bearings keeping the shaft securely in place, and the journal bearings managing the hydrodynamic lubrication (liquid-based lubrication) of the shaft to keep the different metal components from having direct contact with each other.

Bully Dog Big Rig makes their journal bearings from high quality copper because though copper is a soft metal, it works well in lubricated settings and has good corrosion and wear resistance.

Bully Dog Turbo Options

These turbos are bolt-on in design, meaning they make great replacements for OEM turbos, but with a few key upgrades over a stock turbo. Each is designed with a billet compressor wheel which leads to a faster, more efficient spooling than the comparable OEM turbo. This means your truck will be more responsive and it will be easier to make power and get up to speed faster.  A couple other great features of Bully Dog Big Rig Turbos is that there is never a core charge and each has a manufacturer warranty!

Cummins

Cummins has been making high-performance diesel engines for nearly a hundred years now, and in the late 1990s they began fitting their engines with VGTs. Since then, each new model of the Cummins Performance Series (ISX and X15) has been manufactured with a VGT.

Bully Dog Big Rig has options for aftermarket turbo replacements for Cummins Performance Series engines starting from 2007 and continuing to the present year.

High HP and Low HP Options

To make the selection process easier on their customers, Bully Dog Big Rig has created a High Horsepower (High HP) and Low Horsepower (Low HP) option for the majority of their Cummins turbos. You can see the exact range of horsepower that each is designed for in the details of the specific products.

CAT

CAT removed itself from the manufacturing of on-road diesel applications in 2009 to focus on their off-road applications, however, they have never stopped supporting their customers. While new engines are not being built, their old engines continue to run. It is important to note that the following turbos are for single turbo applications only. Bully Dog Big Rig does not currently manufacture ACERT twin-turbo setups.

Detroit Series 60

The Detroit Series 60 is another line of engines that aren’t being manufactured anymore, but they are still being used, bought, sold, and remanufactured. While the engines continue to work great, it is important to remember that they are between 20-30 years old now, and components like the turbo will wear out. Replacing the turbo to make sure that you have one that functions properly for your application is a great idea.
