S&B Body Mounts
When your vehicle is first put together a key piece for stability, alignment, and noise control is the body mounts. These rubber bushings help keep the engine, body, and other components have a nice, firm connection to the frame. However, OEM body mounts are made out of rubber which degrades over time due to various factors including ozone and heat.
Signs of bad body mounts
Vibrations
Have you ever wondered why old vehicles tend to be more noisy than newer vehicles? While part of it is just better design, a large reason why older vehicles tend to be more shaky and noisy is because of degrading or degraded body mounts. As the body mounts begin to break down, they lose their ability to absorb the engine vibrations. Their seal weakens which causes the connecting points to loosen and results in shifting which can cause rattling and other noises.
Misalignment
The body mounts provide a stable grip that keeps everything connected securely to the frame. As the body mounts break down, that grip weakens, but it won’t necessarily weaken at an equal rate across the frame. The inconsistency can cause slight to extreme misalignment in areas of the vehicle which can lead to various issues including leaking windows and difficulty in opening or closing the doors, trunk, and hood of the vehicle.
Damage
Body mounts play a key role in keeping the vehicle safe from damage. As they wear out and the tension becomes inconsistent through the frame and body it can result in warping of the frame or body, misaligned body panels, and damage from the vibrations caused by the engine or the road. Allowing metal to rub against metal is generally a bad idea where vehicles are concerned as the resulting friction and heat can lead to parts fusing together and breaking.
Reasons to Choose S&B Body Mounts
While OEM body mount replacements are available, it is recommended to look at the aftermarket options, as the OEM body mounts will eventually wear out again. S and B body mounts mimic key elements of the OEM design for ease of installation, but have specific design features to overcome the weaknesses in the OEM design
S&B Body Mounts are made from better materials
Silicone vs Rubber
The first design difference between the S&B Body Mounts and their OEM counterparts is the material that they are made from. OEM body mounts are primarily made from rubber which is susceptible to deterioration caused by heat and ozone. S&B uses premium silicone in the design of their body mounts because silicone is ozone and heat resistant. S&B is confident that their body mounts can survive the lifetime of your vehicle.
Rust-resistant Steel Caps
Another area where the OEM body mounts tend to fail is in the steel caps that protect the rubber part from the metal of the vehicle. Factory body mounts are not treated for long-lasting corrosion resistance, and so have a tendency to collect rust. As they rust, their structural integrity weakens, which can cause them to break and leave the rubber part of the body mount exposed to dirt, friction, and other elements that can cause it to deteriorate faster. S&B Body Mounts steel caps come with a special corrosion-resistant coating to protect them from rust buildup and prolong their life.
S&B Body Mounts are easy to install
OEM-style Bolts
It is very important when replacing your OEM body mounts to also replace the bolts. This is because the factory bolts will often be rusty or otherwise weakened. S&B Body Mounts come with factory-style bolts for easy installation, but as an added measure of safety and longevity these bolts have been treated with a corrosive-resistant coating.
Cap-keyed for Secure Installation
It is extremely important when installing new body mounts that they be securely tightened. S&B has made this easier by keying the cap so that it holds the body mount in place to the frame tab during installation. Thanks to this nifty feature you don’t have to worry about the S&B Body Mount spinning with the bolt while you tighten it.
S&B Body Mounts Benefits
Noise and Vibration Reduction Longevity
One of the largest benefits of using S&B Body Mounts which is apparent directly after installation is the noise reduction. The majority of vehicle noise is caused by vibrations, either from the engine or imperfections in the road. As your new body mounts hold your vehicle together with a sure, cushioned connection, the majority of the expected vibrations will be absorbed by the silicone body mounts. Additionally, any rattling or shaking that was previously caused by misalignment of body panels should be reduced back to a minimum as the new body mounts keep the body panels and other components securely in place.
Longevity
S&B has designed their body mounts to be a premium life-time product. This means that they are not only supposed to last the life-time of the vehicle, but keep giving the same level of quality service to the vehicle throughout that time. Nothing man made will last forever, so it is possible that something may happen that will cause your S&B Body Mounts to need replacing someday. However, you can be sure that they will far outlast the OEM replacements.
